Snow and freezing temps are headed to the Front Range this Friday into Saturday. If your irrigation system is already on for the season, take these quick steps now:
1. Shut off your controller — Switch to "off" or "rain mode" to prevent water from freezing inside your lines and heads.
2. Drain exposed lines — Clear any standing water from backflow preventers and valve boxes. Water expands when it freezes and can crack fittings.
3. Insulate your backflow preventer — Wrap it with foam insulation tape or a bag from any hardware store. This is the most common freeze damage point.
4. Check your valve box lids — Make sure they're fully closed. A cracked or missing lid exposes valves to freezing overnight air.
A quick freeze like this won't cause major damage if your system was properly winterized last fall. If you skipped winterization or spot any issues after the cold passes, give us a call — we'll get everything checked before irrigation season kicks into gear.
